esl education

I have been an English as a second language teacher (ESL) for 7 years. I started my teaching journey in public schools across Bac Ninh Province in Vietnam, just outside of Hanoi. I was teaching a variety of ages from grade 1 to grade 12. The class sizes were usually around 50 students. After a year teaching in public schools, I decided to move to China to work in a training school. Here the focus was a lot more about English learning and becoming bilingual. I spent 2 1/2 years teaching in Changsha, Hunan Province.

During the pandemic I moved to Zambia where I began independently teaching online. By this time, I had built up several students who trusted my teaching style and wanted consistent English speaking with a personally recommended teacher. This time online, like for everyone was a unique and new experience but it ultimately allowed me to refine my teaching style and think outside the box.

After three years in Zambia, I returned to Changsha to teach at a Kindergarten. I teach just one class of students aged between 3 and 5. Here the reward of consistent English practice is as pleasurable for the parents as it is for me as a teacher. Watching my students as young as 3 beginning to have conversations in English about superheroes and the effect of coffee is delightfully surprising.

I am a firm believer in providing a curriculum that is varied in its global perspective as well as it’s language content. Above all else I promote the idea of fun in the classroom. Everyone remembers their favourite teachers from school… they were the engaging ones who found creative ways to get their point across. Creativity is something that is always important in my classroom. I strive to showcase my creative talents in the hope that children will be inspired whilst encouraging those who lack confidence in creative pursuits. If you are having fun, being creative, and learning about new cultures you’ve never even imagined then you suddenly forget you are in class and the comprehension of the English language becomes second nature.

Passion Projects

The thing I appreciate most about being an educator is that I am in a unique position to impact the young people I teach. No matter how big or small the lessons I teach them may impact their future. I consider myself passionate about educating my students on issues of race, equality, tolerance, acceptance, and environmental and social issues.

In 2024, together with my students I organised a charity fundraiser. Our academic focus of the term was “Understanding the Earth”. The children and the school community voted on which endangered animals they wished to protect and we organised a bake, toy and art sale to raise funds.
